My Teaching Philosophy

Having earned my Bachelor's and Master's degrees in flute performance with some of the best teachers, I have a lot to share about flute playing! I also have a lot to share about how to remain true to yourself as you pursue artistic goals.

While I place great importance on fundamentals through the use of harmonics, long-tones, and technical exercises, I'm far more interested in looking at the student as a whole, not just the flutist. My lessons are collaborations, working directly with the student to reach their unique individual goals. Whether you want to enter competitions, audition for all-state, or just keep up your chops, we will come up with a unique plan together! My lessons are built around the idea that we must be fully embodied in order to produce beauty, so compassion and patience play a big role.

For all lessons, I emphasize the importance of improvisation and intuitive play as a way of finding your own unique voice. A stable technique and beautiful sound are great building blocks, but I’m far more interested in hearing someone’s soul coming through in their playing!

I currently teach privately for $35 per 60 minute lesson, either in person in Iowa City or online through SuperProf
